What is orthodontic wax?
Orthodontic wax is a natural wax you can use to protect your gums and the lining of your cheeks and lips from braces. When you apply this wax to your braces, it builds a barrier that keeps your braces from causing friction against the inside of your mouth.
What is orthodontic wax made of?
Orthodontic wax is made from natural waxes such as paraffin wax, beeswax or carnauba wax. It also usually contains fillers and modifiers. Some types even come in flavours.
Is it safe to swallow orthodontic wax?

What does orthodontic wax taste like?
Typically orthodontic wax is completely flavourless, however, some brands do come in flavours (most often mint).
How often should I apply orthodontic wax?
You can apply orthodontic wax as often as you need to. It generally depends on where you are in your treatment process. When your braces are first applied, you might have to apply it more often, because your mouth isn't accustomed to having all those new bits of metal in there. The wax gives sores and cuts the chance to heal, and prevents fresh ones from forming. After some time the skin in your mouth will adjust to the braces and you probably won’t need to apply as much wax.
Where can I purchase orthodontic wax?
Your orthodontist will give you some orthodontic wax when you first get your braces applied, as part of an orthodontic care kit. To replenish your supply, go to your local pharmacy, and find it in the oral care section.
Is orthodontic wax really noticeable when it’s on my braces?
Not really. Orthodontic wax is clear, so it's virtually invisible to the naked eye.
Are there alternatives to orthodontic wax?
Some patients prefer dental silicone, which is available in strips. You can also get plastic lip guards that fit over your braces.
How do I apply orthodontic wax?
- Wash your hands.
- Brush your teeth to clean the area where you’re applying the wax.
- Roll a small piece of wax (just enough to cover the wire or bracket) into a ball. This will make it more malleable and easier to apply.
- Gently press the wax onto the wire or bracket.
- Rub the wax into place. It should form a small bump overtop of the bracket or wire, preventing further friction.
How do I remove orthodontic wax?
There are a few tools you can use to remove the orthodontic wax you’ve applied. You can try using a toothpick, a proxy brush (interdens stick) or even dental floss.
If you leave it alone, the wax will simply wear away or flake off over time, so this might not be an issue for you.
